Proposed Provincial Legislation Governing Non-Profit Organizations (Bill 65)
Submitted by The Mills Commu... on August 26, 2010 - 10:49am
The Mills is one among over 45,000 non-profit organizations in Ontario. It has been over 50 years since the corporate legislation for the non-profit sector has been updated. It’s an understatement to say that a lot has changed in the past 50 years.
Non-profit organizations such as the Mills play an increasingly important social and economic role in the life of the Province and in our community to both protect the public good and to enable good work to grow. There is a need to provide a contemporary legal framework. The government of Ontario has proposed such a legal basis with Bill 65, An Act to Revise the Law in Respect of Not-for-Profit Corporations. Public consultation on this bill is currently being held. The Ontario Non-Profit Network (ONN) is a network of networks that helps to build communication and coordination amongst nonprofit organizations working for the public benefit in Ontario.
The ONN has prepared an excellent brief which provides a comprehensive review of the proposed legislation in Bill 65 and suggests several straightforward and practical amendments that would greatly improve the utility of this legislation for nonprofits, funders, and Ontarians who volunteer with, and are served by, these organizations. Their recommendations are based on the input and feedback from sector members they’ve worked alongside with throughout the development of Bill 65.
Whereas there is lots of technical detail in the brief, it is clear and thorough.
I recommend the brief to anyone who is interested in the development of the non-profit sector.
