It's A Walk in the Park - Augusta Street Park Fundraising Concert

n the flavour of an east coast kitchen party, ``It’s a Walk in the Park” promises to offer something musical for every taste. Fashioned after two successful community fundraisers; “Haiti SOS,” in January 2009 for Haitian earthquake relief and last year’s, “Night for Sendai,” for Japanese Tsunami relief, “A Walk in the Park,” will grace the stage of Almonte’s Old Town Hall at 7 pm on February 3rd. Like the two concerts before, visitors can expect a wide range of musical offerings featuring student and adult, amateur and professional musicians. A true reflection of our local musical talent.
Although a hangout for generations of neighbourhood children, the land at Augusta Street Park was formally designated a park in the mid 1970’s. Thanks to the organizational work of a citizens group, a Neighbourhood Improvement (NIP) Grant was issued by the then, Trudeau Federal government, finally bringing water and sewer and other improvements to this part of town. Known as ‘Irish Town,’ this tight-knit, vibrant, and active neighbourhood pursued these improvements for decades.
Like the work done in those early years by its many neighbours, the park now needs your help. The town has passed a resolution allowing the Augusta Street Park Community Committee to start work on the park. Plans include a BMX bike track, an accessible walkway, community gardens and a splash pad. It will take much “Time, Talent and Treasure,” to bring Augusta Street Park back to its former glory. Musical and other volunteers are coming forward to help with the February 3rd concert. Join us at the concert, buy a friend a ticket and find out how we can use your help. Tickets are $10 and now on sale at Baker Bob’s in downtown Almonte. These concerts sell out, so don’t be disappointed and buy your tickets early.
